Original concept for Dungeons & Dragons:
.
MARIONETTE (template)
Marionettes are constructs looking like a living being. Similar to articulated puppets, they are carved from wood and magically treated to better resist flames. The marionette template can be added to any aberration, animal, magical creature, dragon, elemental, outsider, fey, giant, humanoid, monstrous humanoid, undead, plant or vermin with a physical and solid body. It becomes a construct.
.
A marionette retains all the properties of the creature it represents, except the following:
- Environment / Social organization: Any
- Treasure: None
- Alignment: Always Neutral
Additionally, any kind of attack inflicted by a marionette can only deal non-lethal damages. Some abilities or magical powers can be restricted or removed by its creator if he wishes, but he cannot add new ones. Once animated, the construct obeys its owner's simple commands, such as "Stay still and attack anyone who touches this object" or "Go to this location and bring me a red book decorated with emeralds." Healing spells and first aid tests have no effect on it, but a repair spell or a successful crafting test (woodworking) restores its life points normally. A marionette understands the languages of its creator, but it cannot speak or learn to read. However, it is capable of writing whatever is dictated to it.
.
Conditions: Create wondrous item, Animate object, Puppet, Crafting test (woodworking)
Material: A wood piece equivalent of twice the weight of the base creature.
.
Example of marionette:
GOBLIN MARIONETTE
Among the very first marionettes to be designed, goblin marionettes were invented by the gnomes, who quickly commercialized them and exchanged their knowledge with dwarves, elves, halflings and humans. Easy to produce and repair, these puppets are mainly used in military training for young recruits, sometimes in large numbers. Their models are often equipped with weapons and armor made from the same wood as the marionette, in order to make them easier to construct and repair, and more harmless in combat. Natural enemies of the goblins, the dwarves own many of them, as well as the gnomes.
